Developed in response to the need for a lighter armored personnel carrier, the M113 design was approved in 1959 and went into production in 1960. The M113 and its updated successors served as the standard US armored personnel carrier - known unofficially as 'battle taxis' - throughout the Vietnam War. They shuttled combat-ready G.I.s through the brush and evacuated their wounded comrades to medical aid stations in time of need. One modification made to the vehicle during that period was the introduction of a diesel engine, in place of its earlier gasoline motor - a change that was completed by the middle of 1968. The diesel-driven version of the M113 received the designation M113A1. Although the M113 has largely been replaced by the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and is now only in limited use by the US armed forces, the vehicle remains in use today in the armed forces of other allies around the world. Illustrated with 130 photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings. 64 pages.

Lots of pretty good quality color pictures. Some decent background and information that I had not encountered before.This book has different pictures than "M113 Armored Personnel Carrier - Walk Around Color Series No. 15" by the same author . I glad I bought both of them.

Battle-taxi-turned-Armored-Cavalry-Assault-Vehicle, the slab-sided FMC Corporation M113 Armored Personnel Carrier was a Vietnam War fixture, serving in many roles throughout that long conflict. Initally developed to haul troops into combat, it was developed into an assault vehicle armed with multiple machine guns. David Doyle dishes up an illustrated guide to this ungainly and unlikely war machine in this 2009 Squadron/Signal release.
Boasting newly-developed aluminum armor, the M113 was designed to ferry 11 infantrymen in harm's way. Once introduced to Vietnam ops, U.S. Army and ARVN units realized the 'one-one-three's' impact on ops against the VC, the machine being developed to carry several 50-caliber and M60 machine gun mounts. Other versions - bridge-layers, mine-clearers, mortar carriers, etc. - were fielded as well.
For anyone interested in the Vietnam War, Doyle's book offers up an evocative look-back at that long-ago war. The book features over 130 photographs, most in full color, of APCs busting jungle, escorting convoys, pulling maintenance, etc. Included with the pix are six color side-profiles by Don Greer and front/top/side views by Matheu Spraggins.

Book packed of great photos, mostly colour, showing rarely seen parts of the life during the Vietnam war. Very interesting, gives great ideas of dioramas for modellers. Mostly liked the beds dug out under the vehicle at night between the tracks
This book has many great and one of a kind photos of traacks in action, especially of the 11th ACR in action.

Great color photos. You forget with all black and white photos you usually see in wartime shots, color was readily available at the time. Very helpful in scale modeling. Downtime photos like I haven't seen before. Nice reference material. Mike T.
