Recursive Occlusion is a spin-off of the acclaimed series TARDIS Eruditorum, exploring the themes of occultism and mysticism within the classic television series Doctor Who in the form of an at times oblique and entrancing Kabbalah-inspired interactive essay that pays homage to the classic Choose Your Own Adventure series of books in both content and book design.

Excellent concept. Sandifer, has obviously enough knowledge of both Doctor Who AND Kabbalah to convincingly mix the two in such a way as he has attempted here. I'm not entirely sure he quite reaches his full potential though which is my only reason for giving it a 4 and not a 5. The writing is good, the concept is really interesting but I think there is something missing with regards to making the two elements really connect in solid way. I would have hung in there for a book twice the length or more to see it all come together. But, I don't mean to be overly critical because it is what it is...and I think the same criticism is even shared by the author towards the...end, is it...? Perhaps instead of relating Doctor Who to Kabbalah and the tarot (though they are themselves related) it would have been more effective to zero in on one or the other. To be fair and to justify my rating I would say it should be telling my biggest and harshest criticism should be that this book is too short. The clever author and publisher have probably contrived to use this as a ploy to get the reader into the author's other books or toward his blog. Well, they have succeeded in my case because I plan on visiting both.
On the more positive side I will say again, that the idea is really good. The writing is really good. The execution of the CYOA style is good. Even when the book goes off and out of the Doctor Who universe it's well done. What I think I enjoyed the most though was the overall style. Insightful, and deep at times but not intimidating or too heavy handed. You will want to take all the paths just to make sure you've read each page.

Recursive Occlusion Philip Sandifer 9781508606529 Books Reviews
This is simply a stunning work. If you love Doctor Who, have a deep childhood affection for Choose-Your-Own-Adventures, and an interest in literary criticism or mysticism and the occult tradition, you cannot find a better book for you.
It was quirky and interesting, meeting all my expectations ^^
A fun kind of read. I enjoyed it, except I always thought it would be better if none of the chosen paths ended in dying!
