In heightened, luminous prose reminiscent of the best of D.H. Lawrence, Rachel L. Coyne writes about a woman who returns to her Minnesota roots and her dysfunctional extended family in this novel of recovery and redemption. She has to hit bottom and find a way to grieve for everything that's been lost before she can live again.

The protagonist of Whiskey Heart, Kat Lovely, returns to her family's homestead after nearly a decade of absence. Since her departure, her already dysfunctional family has continued its slow and painful decline. Coyne succeeds in carrying the reader through the gallows of inter-family erosion without spiraling her story off into anger and resentment. She possesses a great sensitivity to the barren landscapes of both rural Minnesota and crippling alcoholism.

It is a work of great honesty and explores a profundity of truths. Kat unearths a series of secrets and stories that steadily build tension to the boiling point. Her cousin (and strongest love) Tea has passed away in Kat's absence, and every clue she digs up about her life is veiled in the greyness of memory. The rural Minnesotan community and family members have pared off everything about Tea's character apart from her vices, leaving Kat with a series of unreliable stories and comments. In order to bring about some degree of closure, Kat wades through the marsh of disdain and regret in order to locate a single reed of truth.

It can also be said that Whiskey Heart has a great deal of universality. Kat has followed in Tea's footsteps as a pariah, and she must stand strong against a world of hypocrisy, jealousy, and guilt. The discrimination she encounters throughout the novel is as painful as it is familiar.

This is not to say that it is a laborious read, though. Coyne manages to deftly sew humor and strikingly beautiful descriptions into nearly every scene. Even readers familiar with Whiskey Heart's scenery are given new insight by Coyne's often poetic prose. However uncomfortable some scenes may be, the novel flows rapidly with a pace that belies its accomplishments. Each short chapter contains a secret or mini-revelation that urge the reader deeper into its pages. It is truly remarkable that Coyne presents extreme tragedies without ever veering into drudgery.

In the end, Whiskey Heart is a meditation on what various loves do to us. Romantic love, idyllic love, and family love jockey for position in a world rife with alcoholism and repression. At one point, Kat's mother tells her, "We think people who love us are the people who would never hurt us. But the truth is, the people who love us are the ones that always hurt us, because they're the ones who have the balls to tell us the truth. People who don't care so much don't bother to tell you things." The truth that Kat seeks throughout the novel only comes through certain concessions to love, however painful. Coyne's sparse and beautiful prose takes us through a journey well worth taking and leaves us desiring more.

This is a thumping, powerful book. I kept thinking about quicksand (or mud ...) where the harder you fight to get out, the deeper you get stuck. Highly, highly recommend it. If you have alcoholism or addiction in your family, tread lightly, because the author doesn't hold much back (although, she manages to do so largely without judgment, which is just amazing).

I only wish (or maybe hope ...) that Ms. Coyne might possibly think about giving us more and expanding upon any one of her characters and taking us right thru his or her life, from start to finish. The stories locked up inside every one of her characters (and how each of them viewed the same shared events) would be a set of amazing stories. Every single one of the characters in this too short book left a deep impression on me.

I would love to see this family described in the detail of the Chance family in "The Brothers K" (David James Duncan), one of my favorite all-time books, again about individuals struggling thru the complexities of love in a dysfunctional family. The seeds of a story as fulfilling and moving as DJ Duncan's are completely here.
Sometimes, we move away, far away from our past, from those things and those people that hurt us. But it never fails; there will always be a return where we are forced to face our past, overcome the pain and memories so that we can hopefully be better. This idea spoke to me clearly when I read Coyne's novel Whiskey Heart. It's a small novel, but within its pages, we get to see the breathing, realistic life of Kat Lovely, who finds herself returning to a hometown to free herself of her past demons while having to deal with the dysfunctional extended family that threatens to keep Kat from her breakthrough. From the very first page, Coyne had me hooked, wanting to get inside Kat's mind, her life. At times, the events are so raw that they can take your breath away, but Coyne has a real talent in writing truthfully, in keeping these moments from becoming overly sentimental. At the end of this story, you will wish there was more for Kat to say. And you'll be looking forward to reading Coyne's next work.
Great read.
EXCELLENT READ! Pulls you into the book.
